The Kigali Amendment: a new environmental standard for your refrigeration systems

Signed in 2016, the Kigali Amendment is the most recent amendment to the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty on the environment, established in 1987.

The purpose of the Kigali Amendment is to phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are greenhouse gases that have a major impact on global warming.

This amendment, ratified by 197 states, officially became effective at the beginning of 2019. It focuses on 3 different reduction targets, depending on the level of development of the signatory countries.

In this way, the Kigali Agreement sets new and stricter standards governing the use of these types of gases for refrigeration systems. All these systems are now required to move towards more environmentally friendly solutions. Goodbye synthetic refrigerants!

These measures will help to reduce global warming and thus help to prevent a number of adverse effects, such as rising sea levels, heat waves, severe droughts or melting ice caps.

The kigali agreement: a transition to natural refrigerants

If the Kigali Amendment is respected by all participating countries, it could lead to a 0.5 °C reduction in global warming by the end of the century! This would be a step in the right direction to reduce the major impacts of global warming.

Gradually, binding measures will be imposed against systems using HFCs. Canada may decide to introduce attractive financial incentives for companies wishing to make the transition. In fact, the Government of Québec introduced such a program several years ago and the results show that it has encouraged many homeowners to use natural refrigerants.

The industrial and commercial sectors must therefore consider replacing these refrigerant gases used in refrigeration. They can also rely on government subsidies in order to switch to more environmentally friendly refrigerants.

Natural refrigerants are therefore more than ever the preferred choice. The main choices are:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Ammonia
  • Propane
  • Isobutane

Evapco Systems LMP, ULC already meets the requirements of the Kigali amendment. Our transition to natural refrigerants has long been underway and is now part of our corporate culture!

Refrigeration systems to comply with the Kigali Amendment

Evapco LMP can provide eco-friendly solutions for obsolete and harmful refrigeration systems that negatively affect climate change and the ozone layer.

We also offer consulting services to companies wishing to make the transition at a lower cost.

Take advantage of our commercial and industrial systems, which use the latest generation of refrigerants:

  • The Purity series : this CO2-powered compressor system is perfect for the requirements of industries or businesses that require a refrigeration system. It is also eligible for subsidies.
  • The Crystal series: This system for ice surfaces uses CO2 as a refrigerant. A sensible solution for owners of ice rinks.

In addition to our state-of-the-art systems, we regularly replace refrigeration systems that use fluorocarbons. We offer this service to many types of customers, including supermarkets.
